Founded in 1809, Madison is predominantly known for having one of the finest collections of historic 19th century architecture in the Midwest. Every effort has been undertaken to preserve these fine examples of Federal, Regency, Greek Revival and Italianate period architecture for future generations to enjoy. Explore this beautifully preserved community located on the Ohio River and discover wineries, restaurants, antiques and specialty shops tucked away in century-old buildings.

Nature and Recreation

Hanover Park PoolFrom golf courses to sports complexes to outdoor recreation, you can find it all in Jefferson County. The City of Madison operates 12 parks comprising over 220 acres, including the 160-acre, 18 hole, par 72 Sunrise Golf Course. The Town of Hanover's 20-acre park features a community center, swimming pool, three baseball/softball diamonds, tennis courts and picnic facilities.

In 1920, Clifty Falls State Park was established in Madison to preserve some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. This lush 1,400-acre state park boasts the third highest waterfall in Indiana, towering limestone cliffs, camping facilities, hiking trails, tennis courts, cultural arts programs, and a nature center. The recently renovated Clifty Inn, overlooking the Ohio River, is open 365 days per year and offers 67 sleeping rooms, two large conference rooms, dining facilities and an indoor pool/spa.

Madison’s Riverfront Park, a favorite spot for locals as well as visitors, offers brick walkways, benches, period lighting, picnic areas, overlooks and bandstands. Rivercrest Marina, a 107-slip, protected harbor marina including eleven upscale condominiums was completed in the Fall of 2000.

Miss Madison
Many festivals showcase this community; from the Madison Chautauqua, a juried fine arts show, to the Madison Regatta, a nationally televised hydroplane race. Pictured is the Miss Madison, the only community-owned hydroplane in the world.

Madison Country Club GolfThe Madison Country Club offers a 9-hole, 18 tee stations, par 71 private golf course, two lighted tennis courts, swimming, dining and pro shop facilities.
